Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a preventive dental treatment. A plastic material is placed in the chewing surfaces of primary molar and premolar teeth in the back of your mouth. Molars are often the most susceptible teeth to cavities because of their bumpy chewing surface.

The most important reason for dental sealants is to avoid tooth decay in adults and children.

Fluoride in toothpaste and water protects the smoother teeth in the front of the mouth. But the molars need extra protection. Sealants protect the molars from tooth decay.

Having sealants put on teeth can save time and money in the long run by avoiding fillings used to fix cavities.

Who should get sealants?

Children should get sealants on permanent molars as soon as they come in. The sooner the better, this way, there is no time for tooth decay to begin.

Other teeth with pits and grooves may also need to be sealed as well.

Teenagers and young adults who are prone to tooth decay may also need sealants.

Sealants can last up to 10 years. But they will be checked at your regular dental check-ups to ensure that they are not wearing.
